Eastern Spadefoot Toads

Okay, this was a fun one that took me a while. I had to do some research, because in 17 summers, these are the very first toads I’ve seen on Dewees. Why? Because THEY LIVE UNDERGROUND and are NOCTURNAL. Also, I had to practice the call a few times. Big thanks to Parker Teaches Science and @cindybranscomephotography.

I have to confess, I am a little obsessed with these little guys.  They have vertical pupils and much smoother skin than southern toads.  Take a walk on a rainy night and listen for those waaaah calls, or check out some puddles a few weeks after a rain to see if you can find some of these eastern spadefoot froglets just losing their tails and hopping around.
