Marbled Orbweavers (aka Halloween Spiders) have Orange and Black Markings: Watch this one Spin her Web!

Last month, we were at thhe Clemson Botanical Garden watching a spider spin a web.  Marbled Orbweavers (Araneus marmoreus) often live near streams, but some have become accustomed to leaving near people, decorating at least one of Clemson’s dorms with a creepy spiderweb that is actually real!  It was hard not to be stopped by the beauty of this spider in the field, though.

I know, I know, it’s the second spider in a week, but this one really caught my eye, and it was astonishing to watch her spin this web with agility and speed.  I loved the precision of her back legs as she placed the sticky threads exactly where they would adhere to the radial threads.

Have a happy and safe halloween!
