If you haven’t been following this, the tract has long been the topic of controversy since a developer wants to put in 200 septic dependent homes there. This could mean possible pollution of the class 1 wilderness area of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. The idea that the land could be purchased and held for conservation is a big win for the wildlife that call the area home. BUT Charleston County would need to express their support for this to go forward.
This is where you come in: Charleston meets on Thursday August 20 to determine their support, and they need to hear from constituents who care about this issue.
Sample letter for you to make your own
Dear Council Member,I am very pleased to hear that the Open Space Institute and the South Carolina Office of Resilience are working to purchase and preserve the White Tract within the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in Awendaw.
Cape Romain is one of the largest remaining undeveloped areas along our coast and provides vital habitat for thousands of nesting sea turtles and birds, as well as an important stopover for thousands of migratory birds during the spring and fall migration seasons.
Allowing this property to be developed with more than 200 homes, all dependent on septic systems, would pose a significant threat to the water quality and ecological integrity of this exceptionally sensitive and pristine coastal ecosystem. Once this land is developed, its ecological value cannot be restored.
I urge you to support the purchase and permanent preservation of the White Tract. This is an extraordinary opportunity to protect one of the Lowcountry’s most important remaining natural areas for future generations.
Please help protect Cape Romain.
Sincerely,
This incredible treasure is right in our backyard! Help keep it that way with your letter of support.
