Firewheel, gaillardia pulchella, is one of the easiest plants to grow from seed.  On our island, some is blooming from spring through fall, even though seed heads are also present.  There is a large patch near my house that is one of the best places to observe pollinators like native bees and butterflies.

This plant grows 2-3 feet tall in full sun.  It likes generally dry soil, and can tolerate drought. It attracts a wide variety of native bees.

  • Plant seeds in the fall and rake seeds loosely into soil, water lightly and keep moist until established.
  • Plant will germinate in 2 weeks and establish taproot before the winter frost.
  • If sowing seed indoors in late winter, keep seeds refrigerated.
  • Allow 8 weeks for well-rooted seedling before transplanting at start of frost-free period.
