Wilson’s Plovers, Charadrius wilsonia, are small stocky shorebirds with a ringed neck and a stocky build. They nest on South Carolina beaches May-July, and they are in steep decline because so much of their habitat is in decline or crowded with beachgoers. Keeping out of posted nesting areas and keeping dogs on a leash will help. If you see a bird that looks like it’s injured, and it is peeping at you and trying to get your attention, look closely~ there is probably a nest with eggs or chicks nearby.
