Cicadas

Hieroglyphic cicadas are some of the first to emerge here on Dewees Island, and they make one of the most characteristic sounds of summer.  Dog Day Cicadas are a little larger and emerge about halfway through the summer.  Both kinds have a sound that grows and is often concentrated in oak and or cedar trees.  The Periodical cicadas that plague the northeast don’t show up in the same numbers here, so our cicada sounds are relatively similar year to year, April to October.
